Happy Making!
Todd’s second project puts his skills to the test, while yet again drawing from a lovely memory of his father and daughter. Creating special moments for young children is something every grandparent strives to do. Todd’s father, having a knack for writing, wanted to instill that in his granddaughter. To do this he gave her a mailbox and within it was a letter encouraging her to write him back. This started a lovely exchange of letters every time he visited. Creating a magical festive version of that mailbox that can be used as a direct path to the North Pole, making sure special letters never get lost and end up in the right hands… now that sounds like fun!
Most of this project was going to be relativity simple as long as the measurements were correct, but the real challenge comes with creating the bent top. For that Todd took to the internet to see how to bend wood with a technique called kerfing. It seemed, at first, this was going to be easy… not exactly. With a bit of trial and error and a change-up of materials he manages to bend some MDF.
Of course, a special mailbox like this needs a front plate, that looks like it was cast in iron. Todd utilized the clipart library that comes free with the software, for some inspiration. Using a flourish, dome, a bit of v-carving, and some black spray paint he manages to create something pretty convincing. To top off the small details, he also uses the dome and some free 3D tabs to make a candy door pull, flag, and flag stopper.
This project is sure to create some special memories over the holidays, even after the mail has been sent its the perfect place to hide some tasty treats for your little visitors!
