Holiday Serving Tray

Welcome to the Labs sessions! We love to make and share projects with our community and enjoy nothing more than providing you with FREE monthly CNC projects that you can download and cut for yourself!

Each project comes with its own video for you to watch telling the story of what we’re making from start to finish. It includes technical software footage, machining each part in the Labs and finishing the project, and as an added bonus, we throw in a few tips based on our experience! We would love to see what you turned this project into so download the files from your V&CO account then share what you’ve made on the Vectric Forum.

Excited to hear about the “Vectric Holiday Make Off” Todd took to ask around the office to get a feel for what others did for holiday traditions. It seems everyone has their own little Family traditions that were very special and on top of those, food seemed to be an important part of the celebrations!

Thinking back to a trade show and a book he saw, he used one of its projects as inspiration for a small serving tray. Not wanting to get too much into 3D modelling and wanting the project to be accessible to as many Vectric users as possible, he leaned on the moulding toolpath as a base for this two sided project.

Todd will demonstrate how to use the moulding toolpath in a two sided environment to make a tray including handles. Then, to over come the lack of thicker material on hand, he cleverly creates a “blank” to be used for his final project out of two different types of wood. After that he will review the final project file, showing you how to add texture with the texture toolpath and customizing with text. After cutting it on the CNC, the tray is finished with a food safe finish ready for those special holiday tasty treats.

If you are new to two sided machining or the texture toolpath you may find these video’s useful too:
