With many years of experience in the workshop Steve Nelson has been able to use his traditional tools along with a combination of software packages and a CNC machine to create his projects.
I made a pen and pencil box a while back that was similar to this one. It was mostly made of components so it had to be cut using 3D toolpaths. Since the lid and bottom fit together as a “tongue and groove” this made it difficult to get an accurate fit. So, I thought it would be kind of cool to recreate the entire project without any components. It turned out to be easier than anticipated.
The molding toolpath wasn’t available for the first one I made so making the pen box with just toolpathing back then would have been difficult, at best. This recreation of the older project uses it for most of the inside and outside shapes including the round overs on the outside edges and the slots on the inside of the top and bottom.
